November 3rd, 2023<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Last Friday was a busy day at the Greenway, with both a morning and afternoon cleanup on the schedule. With only three cleanup days left to round out the semester, having a large number of students out on Friday helped to move our progress along quickly!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the morning, two different classes of students joined Sam and Lynn along with instructors Yamil Ruiz and Monika Herr.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Students walked nearly a mile of trail to get to the work site, and they were able to see the incredible difference between the work that has been done so far and the places that are yet to be cleared. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The students worked diligently alongside their teachers, cutting down large invasive plants that had been growing unfettered for years!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the afternoon, Amber Puckette returned for her second time to Upper Chinquapin with another class of University 101 folks. The students were enthusiastic and excited to learn from SPACE about the invasive plants, how to use the different tools, and more!<\/p>\n<\/div>

We are so thrilled with the progress that these students made on the Greenway last Friday, as they helped to make the trail safer and more accessible for everyone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a special Saturday cleanup, our very own director of SLCE, Dave Marlow, volunteered to lead on a weekend day in order to offer students a flexible option to fulfill their Greenway service! Dave was grateful to be joined by Emily Kofoed (FACS) & Julie Smoak (NSE) on this beautiful Saturday morning! <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

They were joined by an impressive group of students from various backgrounds, including a University 101 class led by their awesome peer leader, Cayden, who took the pictures that are included here. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students from other classes joined as well, including one student who had been at the Friday cleanup the day before and thought it was such a great experience that he simply wanted to come twice! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Biology instructor Julie Smoak lent her expertise in botany to help students discover the cool native species that live by the trail. While FACS Chair Emily Kofoed improved everyone’s spirits & set an example for jumping into the work with enthusiasm! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We love that students are having a positive experience as they work on the trail. We know that many of them are stepping out of their comfort zones to serve SPACE in the urban forest at Upper Chinquapin, and we celebrate them for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
