Talking about citations and topic sentences are important parts of any Composition 101 course, but that doesn’t mean it’s all about memorizing rules and flipping through APA manuals. Dr. Peter Caster, a professor of English, uses collaborative activities to help students learn and apply the writing process in his 101 courses. By using shared documents and group peer reviews, students both participate in and model for others how to prepare for and revise their papers. Then, to further increase transparency and student agency, checklists for ensuring all required aspects of the assignment are met are developed as a class.

Dr. Caster presented how he implements these activities in his courses at the Fall 2021 Course Showcase. Watch the 15-minute video below to see his innovative assessment approach!
