{"id":174,"date":"2021-09-13T01:17:30","date_gmt":"2021-09-13T01:17:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.uscupstate.edu\/tip\/?p=174"},"modified":"2021-09-13T20:30:02","modified_gmt":"2021-09-13T20:30:02","slug":"three-steps-to-active-learning-encounter-engage-reflect","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uscupstate.edu\/tip\/three-steps-to-active-learning-encounter-engage-reflect\/","title":{"rendered":"Three Steps to Active Learning: Encounter, Engage, Reflect"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/tophat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Active-learning-in-the-virtual-classroom_1.jpg\" alt=\"image of three different people at different computers from 3 different roads.\"\/><figcaption>Image from Top Hat&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/tophat.com\/blog\/active-learning-virtual-classroom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;How Active Learning Engages Students in The Virtual Classroom&#8221;<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>By Jennifer Bland<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When teaching in online and hybrid courses, you may find it helpful to think through the framework of Encounter, Engage, and Reflect.&nbsp; How will your students <strong>encounter<\/strong> the information you are presenting?&nbsp; How will your students <strong>engage<\/strong> with the information they need to learn?&nbsp; How will you have students <strong>reflect<\/strong> on their learning?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Encounter<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In online and hybrid courses, students may encounter information through outside videos, short instructor-created lectures, readings from the textbook, articles, or case studies.&nbsp; Students could listen to podcasts, complete lab work and experiments, read or create a project, play games or participate in simulations, or read a blog.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Engage<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Students could engage with content by participating in a group read on <a href=\"https:\/\/support.perusall.com\/hc\/en-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Perusall<\/a>, completing discussion board or <a href=\"https:\/\/voicethread.com\/workshop-categories\/workshop-archive\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/voicethread.com\/workshop-categories\/workshop-archive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">VoiceThread<\/a> activities, and applying course topics to real-world examples and case studies.&nbsp; Students could have debates in small groups on VoiceThread with assigned perspectives.&nbsp; They could record themselves working out a math or chemistry problem and talking through how they found their solution. &nbsp;Students could create a <a href=\"https:\/\/ctl.byu.edu\/tip\/concept-mapping#:~:text=A%20concept%20map%20is%20a,the%20ideas%20that%20are%20related.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">concept map<\/a> to show connections between course content or draw pictures to show a process.&nbsp; Maybe you have students <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscupstate.edu\/globalassets\/facultystaff\/faculty-tool-kit\/keep-on-teaching\/bb-tip-sharing-from-onedrive.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">working collaboratively on Office 365 documents <\/a>to brainstorm ideas or topics or create a glossary of terms for the course.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Reflect<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>How are students going to gauge what they have learned BEFORE the major assignment, test, or essay?&nbsp; How will students reflect on what they have learned and need to work on more before that summative assignment?&nbsp; What <a href=\"https:\/\/poorvucenter.yale.edu\/Formative-Summative-Assessments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">formative assignments<\/a> are you providing in your course?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Are you including end of lecture questions?&nbsp; Are you using exit tickets or end-of-module reflection questions?&nbsp; Could you include a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unthsc.edu\/center-for-innovative-learning\/muddiest-point\/#:~:text=Muddiest%20Point%20is%20a%20quick,lesson%2C%20lecture%2C%20or%20reading.&amp;text=While%20it%20is%20easy%20to,students%20and%20devalue%20the%20process.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Muddiest Point<\/a> or a one-minute paper?&nbsp; If you were writing a quiz for this topic or module, what 2 questions would you include?&nbsp; How did ____ go?&nbsp; What can you do to improve next time?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Want to learn<\/strong> more?
